Open Bible, glass of wine beside,
People throw stones, but they never read right.
Psalm 104, He made the vines grow,
Joy in the cup, never meant to lose control.
Israel rejoiced with sheep and the feast,
Wine on the table, they were grateful in peace.
But Isaiah warned the early drinkers,
Eyes red, weak hearts, foolish thinkers.

Discipline lost, and you break God’s plan.

Paul shout loud, “Be not drunk!”
You no be lion when you fall in the trunk.

Why I dey sip am?
Peace or depression I dey drown am?
Is the cup holding me, or I hold am?

But self-control is the anchor of the just.

📜 The Old Testament: Permitted, but Against Reckless Use

Wine was part of the culture and worship:
“He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the service of man… and wine that makes glad the heart of man...” — Psalm 104:14-15

Tithes included wine:
“You may spend the money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink…you shall eat there before the Lord your God and rejoice.” — Deuteronomy 14:26

But woe to those led astray by it:
“Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may follow intoxicating drink...” — Isaiah 5:11
Key Point: Wine is not evil; the misuse of it is.
The issue isn't the drink — it's the drunkenness, the addiction, the carelessness.
📖 New Testament: Wine with Wisdom

Jesus turned water into wine:
“...you have saved the best wine until now!” — John 2:10

Paul told Timothy to take a little wine:
“...use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.” — 1 Timothy 5:23

But drunkards are warned:
“Do not be drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18

Drunkenness is a disqualifier for leadership:
“An overseer must be... not addicted to wine.” — Titus 1:7
“Deacons likewise must be dignified… not addicted to much wine...” — 1 Timothy 3:8
Key Point: The issue is not drinking; the issue is what excess drinking leads to.
Drunkenness dulls discernment and opens the door to destruction.
Let’s call it like it is:
- Drinking is not a sin by default.
- Drunkenness is — and so is causing others to stumble.
“It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.” — Romans 14:21
Paul's principle? Liberty with love.
- Why am I drinking?
- To relax? To fit in? To numb pain?
- Is it controlling me? Or can I live without it?
- Will this hurt my witnessing? Will a younger believer misunderstand and fall?
“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not helpful… but I will not be brought under the power of any.” — 1 Corinthians 6:12
🛡️ Final Thought: Be Sober-Minded — Always
Spiritual warfare demands a sober soldier:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8
If you’re constantly under the influence, you’ll never live under the full authority of the Spirit.
🧭 Conclusion: Drink? Maybe. Drunkenness? Never.
If you can drink moderately, without compromising your conscience or causing others to stumble—glory be to God. But if it tempts you toward excess, confusion, or addiction—abstain completely.
“It’s better to be filled with the Spirit, not the bottled spirit.”
